RGIII: The Great, The Good, and The Not-So-Good

All eyes on RGIII. Here's the Great, the Good, and the Not-So-Good through three preseason games.

The Great
- His accuracy is superb, especially on the move. Beautiful touch, beautiful placement, he throws with the right velocity and to the right location.
- His speed and quickness are as advertised. He makes defenders miss, and his bursts of speed are elite.

The Good
- Poise and confidence. RGIII has the poise, presence, and confidence you want in a QB, and this can be especially hard to find in a rookie QB. At the same time, his confidence might be a touch, just a touch, too much.

As one example, a couple months back he posted on his Facebook page an exchange with Mia Hamm, suggesting she and him resurrect those Michael Jordan commercials of old "anything you can do I can do better." Mia Hamm and Michael Jordan have championships and gold medals, accomplishments at the highest levels. RGIII has 0 championships in high-school and college, and hasn't done anything (yet) in the NFL. RGIII needs to have confidence and poise, but he can't act like someone who's already accomplished greatness.

The Not-So-Good
- Pocket presence. When a rusher comes free, RGIII is great at making him miss, but he is not great at staying poised within the pocket. Ideally you want to avoid the defender, reset the feet in the pocket, and throw. RGIII avoids the defender, takes several steps backwards or sideways, and then looks to make a play. He concedes the breakdown of the play too easily. If he wasn't so quick to leave the pocket, he could make things happen within the play that was called. He's got all the mental skills to learn and develop, so he'll get there.
