Does Shanahan think Jim Haslett was out-coached?

Last week I complained that Jim Halett was being out-coached and out-schemed by other team's head coaches and offensive coordinators. After this week's loss to the Carolina Panthers, Mike Shanahan seemed to diplomatically imply the same thing:

First, Shanahan said the following about the defense: "I’ve got to do a better job of getting these guys ready to play."

A day later, Shanahan elaborated, first complimenting the Panthers offense, but then suggesting that the Panthers offensive game-planning out-smarted the Skins defensive-game planning. About the Panthers offense, he said: "I thought they did a good job of kind of keeping us off balance with the option, a little bit of their formations and shifts and doing some things with Cam [Newton] that we haven’t seen a lot of."

About the Skins defense, Shanahan said: "I have to do a better job of making sure that we’re better prepared during the week because our defense is too physical and too good ... I have to make sure that I put them in situations more times than not to make sure that they feel very comfortable in every look that they see."

Shanahan's words direct the criticism at himself, but we all know that Shanahan is an offensive-minded head coach and Jim Haslett is essentially head coach of the defense. Something has to change, and it might be that we have a new defensive coordinator next year.
