Skins vs. Falcons: The Great, The Good, and the Not-So-Good

The Great
  • Alfred Morris. He keeps improving, this time averaging 6+ yards per carry and once again breaking 100 yards.  Announcers often compare Morris to Terrell Davis because both were 6th round picks by Mike Shanahan, but I also think his running style is reminiscent of former Redskins Stephen Davis -- who like Morris relied not on speed but vision, angles, anticipation, and running through arm tackles.
  • Ryan Kerrigan.  Plays key roles both in pressuring the QB and dropping back into pass coverage, and once again displays game-changing ability with a pass block/INT/TD on one play.
  • Barry Cofield.  Nose tackles rarely get attention.  When the Skins were up 3 with 7 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, Cofield sacked Matt Ryan to create a 3rd-and-long and on the very next play tipped Ryan's pass to force a 53-yard FG attempt.  Unfortunately, it's only the Skins who have a kicker unable to make long kicks, and the Falcons made the long FG.
The Good
  • Kirk Cousins.  He showed some poise and accuracy on his throws, and the TD to Moss was beautiful.  But even on that play Cousins stared down his target.  Cousins continued to stare down his targets which led to the INTs you expect from a backup rookie QB in his first game.
  • London Fletcher.  London has several missed tackles today, but also logs a team-leading 8 solo tackles.
  • Santana Moss.  Only 2 receptions, but his 77-yard TD reception from Cousins was HUGE when it happened.
  • RGIII.  His stat line is unimpressive (10-15, 91 yards), but his accuracy continues to impress.  Of his 5 incompletions, at least 4 were well thrown balls -- a drop by Fred Davis, a drop by Santana Moss who was visibly angry at himself, a strip from Garcon who caught the ball but was stripped while going to the ground, and a ball slightly behind the receiver but it had to be thrown slightly behind because an on-target throw would have been intercepted.  Obviously we all hope RGIII is not seriously injured.
  • Safeties.  Reed Doughty and Madieu Williams actually played reasonably well against an explosive Falcons passing attack.  The corners were beaten more often than the safeties, and the safeties broke up several passes and contained well.
The Not-So-Good
  • Brandon Banks.  Plenty of opportunities for kick and punt returns, and he just looks hesitant and indecisive.  He's essentially on the roster for one reason (despite attempts to incorporate him more in the offense), and I'm not sure his production justifies his roster slot.
  • Billy Cundiff.  He can't make long kicks, he's inconsistent on routine kicks.  Meanwhile Skins' opponents are regularly making kicks from 50+ yards.  What else is there to say.
