Skins vs. Ravens: The Great, The Good, and the Not-So-Good

Tremendous concern for RGIII's knee, but a tremendous come-from-behind win with key contributions from many.

The Great
  • Ryan Kerrigan. Had two HUGE QB pressures.  One led directly to Flacco's INT, the other prevented Flacco from completing a 2nd quarter TD pass to a wide open Ravens receiver.  Huge impact that won't show up in his stat-line.
  • Kai Forbath.  His kick-offs are a concern, too returnable and occasionally out-of-bounds.  But he's made up for that by being perfect on FGs for the season, including two long FGs plus the game-winner in OT today against the Ravens.  Amazing accuracy, unfazed in the clutch.
  • Alfred Morris.  He's the other Rookie of the Year.  Another game with 100+ yards on 5+ per carry.  Such good vision, so tough to tackle.  The fumble hurt, though.
  • Kirk Cousins.  Came into the game cold, but ready.  Great poise under pressure on all three of his pass attempts, huge TD pass to Garcon with seconds remaining, and great timing and commitment on the QB sneak for the tying 2-pt conversion.
  • Pierre Garcon.  Game-tying TD catch.  Throughout the game he produced yards-after-the-catch, and once again led the Skins in receptions and receiving yards.
  • Richard Crawford.  Returning punts in place of Banks, he shows good decision-making about when to field and when to fair catch, and helps win the game with a 64-yard return in OT. (I guess we can forgive him for juking himself to the ground instead of trying to outrun the punter).
The Good
  • RGIII.  The Skins season might depend on the extent of his knee injury.  What toughness to come back, barely able to walk, and continue to move the Skins down the field.  Had a good, not great, game throwing and passing.  Occasionally holds onto the ball too long in the pocket and takes unnecessary hits and sacks.
  • Santana Moss.  52 yards on 3 receptions, which is fine, but on a bazooka-like throw from RGIII 60-some yards in the air Moss let the ball bounce off his shoulder pads.
  • Leonard Hankerson.  Nice day as a big possession receiver, 4 receptions for 67 yards.
  • Defense.  Got torched in the first half, stiffened in the second.  Letting up 28 points isn't great, but it was enough.
  • London Fletcher.  Hobbled, but came up with several tackles and a key INT.
  • Sav Rocca.  Nice punts, good hangtime, got the Skins out of some field position holes.
The Not-So-Good
  • Brandon Banks.  Inactive today.  Richard Crawford shows us what a smart and decisive punt-returner can do.   Have to feel for Banks because it's hard to see him sticking around after this season.

  1. no DeAngelo in the Not-So-Good? Logan Paulsen with multiple killer penalties again for the 4th straight week.

  2. Good points. I had DeAngelo as Not-So-Good in the first draft, but because the first TD pass was more Williams' fault (he had over the top coverage), and because DeAngelo played on a gimpy ankle, I gave him a pass.
