Beck's First Three Passes: Good Performance, Poor Results

With 6:34 left in the 1st quarter against the 49ers, Beck's stats are a follows: 1 for 3 for 2 yards. Anemic. But here's why stats don't tell the story.

On the first pass, Beck got pressured very quickly, he didn't panic, he waited until the last moment, and targeted the guy designed to come open. Unfortunately the ball fell incomplete. Yet, Beck made a good read, did not panic under pressure, held the ball as long as possible to let the play develop, got rid of the ball before the sack, and threw the ball to a good location where only his receiver had a chance.

On his second pass Beck was again pressured fast but used great footwork to quickly throw the ball in the flat for a screen pass as he was hit, and the pass was completed for a short-pickup.

On his third pass Beck was yet again pressured fast, but moved within the pocket to create time, and found Helu for a completion on 3rd down -- except that Helu bobbled and dropped the ball.

In short, Beck get good grades for these three pass-plays, contrary to the stat-line.

*Update: Beck was terrible the rest of the game, except for those few minutes at the end in the no-huddle when the game's outcome was already decided.
