This Time Blame Beck

Beck just threw an interception on a pass intended for Fred Davis. Hard to say exactly what went wrong, because Fred Davis was open and the throw was accurate. However, a hard charging 49er safety had anticipated the throw and beat Davis to the ball.

Perhaps Davis should have broken harder on the ball or sensed the defender and stepped in front to shield the ball with his body. But I'm putting this one on Beck.

Beck could have done a few things better:

1) He could have seen that the safety was in good position to break on the ball and make a different decision with the ball, either throw it elsewhere, or throw it only where Davis has a chance to make a play

2) He could have thrown the ball with more zip to get it there more quickly

3) He could have thrown the ball a hair earlier; Davis was open and it would have been a nice reception.

Regardless, the Skins offense needs to get going, and when a receiver (or tight-end) is open for a nice gain, Beck has to not only get the ball there but get it there on time.

*Update: Another chance to blame Beck. With 4 minutes left in the first half Beck had Davis open for about a 20-yard gain but instead threw an incomplete pass in the general direction of Gaffney. That said, Beck was hit the instant he threw the ball and perhaps with a half-second more time he could have seen the play develop and made the right choice.

**Update 2: Beck and open receivers, he avoids them like he's allergic.
