Grossman Knows The Offense Very Very Well

Lots of coach and player quotes in the hours after Rex Grossman was named the starting QB. One thing that's clear is that Grossman's understanding and execution of the offense is at a very high level:

"He’s familiar with the system. I thought he was pretty automatic with a lot of his reads." - Mike Shanahan

"Last year when he came here, we didn’t know what to expect ... But when you watched him in practice, it was like, this guy is killing it out here." - Santana Moss

"He went out there and run the offense well, was extremely efficient with it." - Anthony Armstrong

My opinion matters infinitely less than those I just quoted, but for whatever it's worth I share the same sentiments, as I noted in a post three days ago: "Grossman makes more correct decisions more quickly than Beck in terms of where to throw the ball on any given play."

The best NFL QBs are those who can be "automatic" with their reads, those who, based on the play-call and defensive alignment, know where to go with the ball before the receiver is open and often before the ball is snapped. On this dimension, at least, Grossman appears to be playing at a very high level.

  1. Grew up as a dallas fan (little trivia for you)...regardless, you can't get too excited about Rex. You just can't.

I do like Hightower though. Shanahan knows how to make good running backs look like great running backs. I could imagine Hightower having a really good year.

  2. yeah, unfortunately i think you're right about grossman. his beautiful throws and smart decisions are interspersed with fumbles and interceptions. and you don't win with turnovers in the nfl.
